How long does an MOT take? Most standard MOT tests take between 45 minutes and one hour to complete. Your total time at the test centre can vary based on how busy the garage is, whether your vehicle passes first time, and what type of car you're driving. Understanding these variables helps you plan your day more effectively.
Most vehicles complete their MOT inspection in approximately one hour. This timeframe covers the full roadworthiness assessment that the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) requires. The test itself usually takes 30-45 minutes, with additional time for paperwork, vehicle positioning, and documentation.
A straightforward pass for a well-maintained vehicle might take only 45 minutes from arrival to completion. A vehicle requiring closer inspection could stretch to 75 minutes or beyond. The test centre's workload also influences timing considerably. During peak hours, typically mid-morning and early afternoon on weekdays, you might wait longer before your test begins.
Vehicle age plays a subtle role here. Newer cars with modern emission systems often pass more quickly because diagnostic equipment can verify systems faster. Older vehicles sometimes require more hands-on checking, particularly for manual systems.
Several distinct elements influence how long your MOT appointment will take from start to finish.
The condition of your car directly impacts test duration. A well-maintained vehicle with fresh brake pads, good tyre tread, and functioning lights moves quickly through inspection. A poorly maintained car triggers deeper investigation. If the examiner notices excessive tyre wear, they'll measure it precisely. If brake fluid looks discoloured, they'll investigate further. Each investigation adds 10-20 minutes to your total time.
A quiet Tuesday morning might mean your MOT starts promptly and finishes within 50 minutes. The same test centre on a Friday afternoon, with five vehicles queued, means you might wait 30 minutes before the examiner begins. Equipment availability also affects timing. Modern test centres with multiple brake testers and diagnostic bays can process vehicles faster than facilities with single-unit setups.
Different vehicle types have different testing requirements. A standard petrol saloon follows the basic MOT protocol. Diesel vehicles require emissions testing calibrated for diesel engines. Electric vehicles require specialist knowledge and different diagnostic approaches, as they lack traditional exhaust systems.
Vans and larger vehicles have extended testing protocols taking roughly the same time as a car MOT. Motorcycles are quicker, typically 30-40 minutes.
Understanding the actual inspection process helps explain why the test takes as long as it does. The MOT is a systematic, legally required safety and emissions assessment.

The examiner begins by checking your vehicle's documentation and running a DVSA computer check to verify the vehicle's history. This takes 5-10 minutes. They then physically inspect the vehicle, checking lights, wipers, mirrors, and bodywork for corrosion or damage in roughly 10-15 minutes.
Safety checks follow. The examiner tests your brakes using a dedicated brake tester, which measures braking force on each wheel in 10-15 minutes. They check suspension, steering responsiveness, and tyre condition, including tread depth measurement. Emissions testing comes next, where your vehicle is connected to an emissions analyser. For petrol vehicles, this takes 5-10 minutes; diesel vehicles require a slightly different protocol, also taking 5-10 minutes.
Finally, the examiner completes paperwork, enters data into the DVSA system, and prints your certificate or failure notice in 5-10 minutes.
You can't speed up the actual MOT test, but you can prepare your vehicle to ensure nothing delays the process or causes a failure requiring additional testing.
Before your MOT appointment, check these items:
| Preparation Item | Time to Check | Impact on Test Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Lights and wipers | 5 minutes | Prevents 10-15 minute delay if replacements needed |
| Tyre condition and pressure | 10 minutes | Prevents 5-10 minute detailed measurement if borderline |
| Brake function | 5 minutes | Prevents extended brake tester investigation |
| Exhaust condition | 3 minutes | Prevents immediate failure and retest |
| Fluid levels | 5 minutes | Prevents diagnostic investigation |
A well-prepared vehicle moves through the test smoothly without requiring further investigation.
You can typically book an MOT appointment up to 4-6 weeks in advance through online booking systems. This gives you flexibility to choose a convenient time slot. Early booking also means you're more likely to get your preferred time; morning appointments tend to be quieter and faster than afternoon slots.
Your vehicle's manufacturer handbook specifies when your first MOT is due, typically three years after first registration. Subsequent MOTs are required annually. You can book your MOT up to one month before your current certificate expires, and the new test date is counted from your old expiry date. This means if your MOT expires on the 15th and you test on the 10th, your new certificate expires a year later on the 15th.
An MOT failure significantly extends your time at the garage. The most frequent MOT failures relate to lighting, tyres, and brakes. A blown brake light, worn brake pads, or tyres below the 1.6mm tread threshold are common reasons for failure. Emissions failures occur when exhaust gases exceed permitted limits, often caused by a faulty oxygen sensor or engine management issue.
If your vehicle fails, the examiner provides a detailed failure notice listing every defect. A retest after minor repairs typically takes 20-30 minutes. The examiner re-examines only the failed items plus a few random checks. If multiple systems have failed, diagnostic time extends significantly. An emissions failure, for example, might require 30 minutes to an hour of investigation before repairs and retesting.
You're welcome to wait at the test centre while your MOT is underway, though it's not necessary. Many test centres have waiting areas with seating. Some people prefer to wait because they want to discuss results immediately. Others find it more convenient to drop their car off and use the time elsewhere.
If you choose to drop off your vehicle, confirm the estimated completion time with the receptionist. Most garages aim to complete MOTs within the 45-60 minute window, but if your vehicle is part of a busy schedule, it might take longer.
Many car owners combine their MOT with a full service or major service to address maintenance in one visit. A full service typically takes 1-2 hours and includes oil and filter change, fluid top-ups, and filter replacements. A major service is more comprehensive, often taking 2-3 hours, and includes additional work like spark plug replacement.
If you combine your MOT with a full service, expect your total time at the garage to be 2-3 hours. The MOT happens first (45-60 minutes), then the service work follows. The advantage is that the mechanic can address any minor issues flagged during the MOT before they become problems.

A standard MOT test typically takes between 45 minutes to 1 hour for most vehicles. However, the exact duration depends on your vehicle's condition, age, and type. Newer cars in good condition may pass more quickly, whilst older vehicles or those requiring additional diagnostic checks may take longer. The DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) sets the testing procedures, but actual time can vary between test centres based on their workload and equipment.
Before your MOT appointment, check your tyres (including tread depth and pressure), ensure all lights are working, verify your wipers and washers function properly, and confirm your brakes are responsive. Check that your exhaust isn't visibly damaged, your horn works, and your mirrors are secure. Ensure your vehicle is clean enough for the mechanic to inspect it properly. Bringing your V5C registration document and booking confirmation helps the process run smoothly at the test centre.
You can book your MOT up to one month before your current certificate expires without losing any validity. If you pass the test early, your new MOT certificate will be valid for 12 months from the date of the original expiry, not from the test date. This means booking early is a sensible approach to ensure you're never caught without a valid MOT. Most test centres allow advance booking, and many garages in Kettering offer hassle-free online booking to make scheduling convenient.
Common MOT failure reasons include worn brake pads, defective lights, bald or damaged tyres, and emissions test failures. Issues with your suspension, steering components, or structural damage can also cause failures. When a vehicle fails, additional diagnostic time is needed to identify and document the fault. If repairs are made on-site, the retest process adds further time. Understanding these common failures and addressing them before your test can help you pass first time and avoid extended time at the garage.
