The MOT checklist is a comprehensive inspection standard that every vehicle in the UK must pass annually to remain roadworthy and legally compliant. Your car's MOT test covers critical safety systems, emissions, and structural integrity, everything that keeps you and other road users safe.
At Kettering Motorist Centre, we've helped hundreds of local motorists understand exactly what inspectors look for during this mandatory test. The checklist isn't arbitrary. Each item exists because it directly affects either safety or environmental impact. Knowing what's being tested gives you the chance to address potential failures before you book your appointment.
The test typically takes between 45 and 60 minutes, and the pass or fail hinges on whether your vehicle meets current UK safety and emissions standards (gov.uk). Understanding the MOT checklist means you're not walking in blind, you know the weak points to check beforehand.
Your vehicle's lighting system is one of the first things an MOT tester examines, because faulty lights are a genuine hazard in poor visibility or darkness. The tester checks all exterior lights: headlights, dipped beam, main beam, fog lights, brake lights, reversing lights, and side lights. Each bulb must work, and the lens must be clean and undamaged.
The windscreen and windows are also critical. Any cracks or chips larger than a certain size, or damage in the driver's direct line of sight, will trigger a failure. Wipers and washers must function properly, the tester actually operates them. Your windscreen must be clean enough that you can see clearly in all directions. Many vehicles fail on this section simply because the windscreen is dirty or the wiper blades are worn.
Reflectors around the vehicle must be clean and intact. These often get overlooked, but a missing or damaged reflector can result in a failure. If you're preparing for your MOT in Kettering, spend a few minutes checking that all your lights work and your glass is clean.
Brakes are non-negotiable. The MOT tester checks brake pad thickness, brake fluid condition, and whether your braking system operates smoothly without pulling to one side. A soft or spongy brake pedal, or one that sinks to the floor, will fail the test. The handbrake must also hold the vehicle securely on an incline.
Steering is tested for play and responsiveness. The tester rotates the steering wheel to check for excessive movement before the wheels begin to turn. If there's too much slack, or if the steering feels stiff or unresponsive, that's a failure point. Power steering fluid must be at the correct level and free from leaks.
Suspension components, shock absorbers, springs, and bushes, are inspected for damage, corrosion, or wear. A clunking noise when the tester moves the vehicle, or visible damage to suspension parts, will lead to failure. This is where many older vehicles come unstuck. Worn suspension isn't just uncomfortable; it affects your ability to control the car safely.
Your tyres must have a minimum tread depth of 1.6 millimetres across the central three-quarters of the tyre (gov.uk). The tester uses a gauge to measure this. Many vehicles fail because the tyre tread is too worn. Beyond tread depth, tyres must be free from bulges, cuts, or damage that exposes the inner structure.
Tyre pressure matters too. Under-inflated or over-inflated tyres affect handling and can hide suspension problems. Check your tyre pressures before your test, you'll find the correct figures on a sticker inside the driver's door or in your owner's handbook.
Suspension geometry is also checked. The vehicle must sit level and not lean excessively to one side. Broken springs, worn shock absorbers, or damaged bushes will cause the vehicle to fail. If your car bounces excessively when you press down on the bonnet, that's a sign your suspension needs attention before the test.
The most common reasons vehicles fail the MOT are often preventable. Worn brake pads top the list, many drivers wait until the test to discover their brakes are below the legal limit. Faulty lights come second. A single bulb failure might seem minor, but it's an automatic failure.
Worn tyres are consistently in the top three failure reasons. Drivers often don't realise how worn their tyres are until the tester measures them. Suspension faults, usually worn shock absorbers or damaged springs, account for a significant proportion of failures, particularly on older vehicles.
Emissions failures are becoming more common as vehicles age. A faulty oxygen sensor or blocked catalytic converter will trigger an emissions failure. Windscreen damage also fails more vehicles than many people expect. A chip or crack in your direct line of sight is a failure, even if it seems minor.
The good news: most of these issues are detectable before your test. A quick walk around your vehicle, checking lights, tyres, and glass, catches the majority of potential failures. At Kettering Motorist Centre, we offer pre-MOT checks that identify these issues so you can fix them before the official test.
Electric vehicles undergo the same MOT test as conventional cars, but with some specific additional checks. The tester must verify that your high-voltage battery system is secure and undamaged. Any exposed wiring or damage to the battery pack will result in failure.
The electric motor and drivetrain are checked for leaks and damage. Regenerative braking systems must function correctly. The tester also checks that your electric vehicle's warning lights and displays are working, particularly the state-of-charge indicator and any fault warnings.
Tyres, brakes, lights, and suspension checks are identical to petrol or diesel vehicles. However, electric vehicles often have different brake pad wear patterns because regenerative braking does much of the work. This can mean your brake pads last longer, but the test requirements are the same.
If you drive a hybrid or electric vehicle in Northamptonshire, Kettering Motorist Centre has the specialist diagnostic equipment and training to handle your MOT. For electric vehicles specifically, our sister site kmcelectric.co.uk provides dedicated servicing and support tailored to EV ownership.
The standard MOT test takes between 45 and 60 minutes from start to finish. This includes the time the tester needs to inspect all the safety-critical systems, run emissions checks, and document their findings. The actual inspection time is typically 40 to 50 minutes, with the remaining time spent on paperwork and reporting results.
If your vehicle fails the test, you'll receive a detailed report listing all the faults. You can then choose to have repairs carried out and request a retest. A retest must be conducted within 10 working days to be charged at the reduced retest rate (gov.uk).
Booking your MOT in advance, especially during busy periods, ensures you get a convenient appointment slot. At Kettering Motorist Centre, our online booking system makes scheduling straightforward, no upfront payment required, and you'll know exactly when to bring your vehicle in.
Preparation is the key to passing your MOT first time. Start by checking all your lights: headlights, dipped and main beam, fog lights, brake lights, reversing lights, and side lights. Replace any blown bulbs. Clean your headlights and tail lights thoroughly, dirt reduces their effectiveness.
Check your tyre tread and pressure next. Measure the tread depth using a 20-pence coin: if the outer ring is visible, your tread is too shallow. Inflate all tyres to the pressure specified in your owner's handbook or on the sticker inside your driver's door. Don't forget the spare.

Inspect your windscreen and windows for cracks or chips. Even small damage in your line of sight can cause failure. Check that your wipers work smoothly and your washer fluid is topped up. Look under the vehicle for any obvious leaks, oil, coolant, or brake fluid pooling underneath is a red flag.
Test your brakes by pressing the pedal firmly. It should feel firm and responsive, not soft or spongy. Your handbrake should hold the vehicle securely on a slope. Listen for any unusual noises when you drive, clunking from the suspension or grinding from the brakes are warning signs.
Check your seatbelts function smoothly and your horn works. Look at your mirrors and ensure they're secure and not cracked. If you notice any warning lights on your dashboard, address them before your test. Many warning lights indicate faults that will cause an MOT failure.

The most common MOT failure points include worn brake pads, defective lights, tyre damage or incorrect tread depth, and faulty windscreen wipers. Suspension issues, steering problems, and emissions failures also account for many rejections. Regular checks before your test can catch these issues early. Our team at Kettering Motorist Centre can perform a pre-MOT inspection to identify potential problems.
Electric vehicles have a modified MOT checklist. The emissions test is skipped entirely, but examiners check the high-voltage battery condition, electric motor function, regenerative braking system, and safety systems unique to EVs. All other checks, lights, tyres, brakes, steering, and windscreen, remain the same. If you drive an electric or hybrid vehicle, our specialists at KMC have the training and equipment to ensure your test goes smoothly. Visit kmcelectric.co.uk for more information on our EV services.
A standard MOT test typically takes 45 minutes to 1 hour. The examiner works through a fixed checklist covering around 80 different items. The exact duration depends on your vehicle's condition and whether any issues are found that require closer inspection. At Kettering Motorist Centre, we provide a hassle-free online booking system so you know exactly when to expect your appointment.
You must bring your vehicle registration document (V5C) and a valid form of identification. If your vehicle has an existing MOT certificate, bring that too, though it's not legally required. The DVLA uses your registration number to verify your vehicle's details. Our team will confirm all necessary information during your booking at Kettering Motorist Centre.
If your vehicle fails, you receive a failure certificate detailing all faults. You can arrange repairs and retake the test within 10 working days without paying the full fee again. Some faults are 'major' (safety-critical) and others are 'minor' (less serious). Our repair services can address most MOT failures. Once repaired, we can rebook your retest quickly through our online system.
Yes. The DVLA provides a free MOT checker on their website where you can enter your registration number to see your vehicle's MOT history and expiry date. This helps you plan ahead and avoid driving without a valid MOT, which is illegal. When you're ready to book your next test, Kettering Motorist Centre offers convenient online booking with no upfront payment required.
No. Your vehicle's manufacturer warranty is not affected by having your MOT carried out at an independent garage. The MOT is a legal requirement separate from warranty cover. What matters for your warranty is that any repairs are done correctly and documented. Kettering Motorist Centre maintains full transparency on all work carried out, so you have complete records for warranty purposes.
